Petra

The jewel of South Jordan is Petra, the unique 2,000-year-old rock-carved city, and in 2007 chosen as one of the 7 new worldwonders. Carved entirely into the rose-red cliffs, the remains of the once lost Nabataean city of Petra includes temples, Roman theaters, monasteries, houses and roads.
The wealth and political power of the Nabataean people is derived from their control of the international trade routes. Lost to outsiders for hundreds of years, Petra has been a symbol of the hidden treasures of the Near East since its rediscovery in 1812. Later on the village of Wadi Musa originated around Petra.

The sights
Your visit to Petra starts with the journey into the mountain-ringed city along the Siq. A winding, one kilometer long fissure through surrounding and overhanging cliffs. At the end you will be amazed by the breathtaking beauty of one of Petra's most impressive monuments, the treasury or al Khazneh, which suddenly looms up. The monument derives its name from the story that an Egyptian farao conceiled his treasure in the urn at the top of the building. On the go you'll see, among other things, the great temple, the temple of the winged lions and the unemcumbered impressive qasr al bint.

In short, Petra is of unprecedented beauty and is absolutely worth visiting. A drive to Petra takes about 3 hours. It's also possible to travel by airconditioned jett from Amman to Petra.
In Wadi Musa and the environement of Petra, there are several possibilities for accomodation.
